SMOKE TESTING IS COMPLETED

The City's recent smoke testing by the TREKK Design Group, LLC is now complete. It has resulted in specific information as to where and how ground water is entering the City's sanitary sewer lines. Over 300 homes around Lake Lotawana have identifiable points where storm water enters the sewer system. In addition, the City is responsible for approximately 160 defects on the main sewer lines, manhole covers and pump stations.

Letters have been sent to the homeowners identifying the defects on private properties around the lake. Each letter includes a list of defects with photographs that show where the smoke occurred.  In each photo a tripod and a small red flag indicates the source(s) of the smoke.  GPS Coordinates exist for better accuracy if needed.

The steps necessary to make repairs are outlined below per city ordinance:
* The homeowner is held responsible for the indicated repair(s)
* A sewer repair permit must be obtained. It is available on the City's website at http://www.lakelotawana.org/Sewer_Bill.php or at City Hall inside Gate 2.  The permit is necessary for repairs that involve construction and to schedule an inspection.
* The Director of Public Works must inspect the completed repair
*  The homeowner has a 90-day grace period to fix the listed problem(s).  If after 90 days no action has been taken, the homeowner will be assessed a $50.00 monthly penalty in addition to the sewer charges until the problem is fixed and inspected.

City Hall Pet Licensing

Just a reminder from City Hall, all pets need to be licensed in January, on a yearly basis.  The annual licensing fee is $3 for each pet.  Please bring the current vaccination record to City hall at which time you will receive the pet tag.
Animal Control Coverage

If a resident has an animal control issue, they should call the Lotawana Police number 816.578.4333 as usual.  The initial response will most likely be by a police officer, with the Blue Springs animal control services limited mostly to transporting animals, either to the vet or a shelter, depending on circumstances.

As is the case now, the city will not trap wildlife or other animals, but has cages available for residents who request them.

Animal Control is the first of a number of services in which the city will be collaborating with other organizations to endeavor to provide the professionalism and responsiveness residents expect in spite of staffing and financial challenges.
